Mark & Dan

Mark Waterfield: vocals, harmonica

Dan Whaley: 6 & 12 string guitar, ukulele, banjo, harmonium, bass, drums, shaky egg, anything else that comes to hand

It all started in late 2007 when Mark suggested putting together a scratch band of union musicians to play at the company we both work for's union AGM. By the time the AGM came round, the "scratch band" consisted of Mark singing and me strumming a travel guitar on a handful of Guthrie & Seeger union songs, which was well received by a roomful of slightly perplexed but appreciative union members.

Anyway, we both enjoyed it so much we decided to perform our stripped down union set at a variety of folk clubs around Kent & Sussex. In keeping with the nature of these songs, we aren't particularly precious about the arrangements, will perform them on whatever instruments come to hand and will mostly only rehearse them just before playing them on stage, often in the bogs or car park of whichever venue we happen to be at. No point in being over-rehearsed I always say.

Waterfield without Whaley

The following three tunes were recorded at the same session as the ones above, but feature Mark solo. I just pressed the record button.

Cruel Mother

Have You Seen But A White Lily Grow?

Landlord

Waterfield, Welch & Whaley

On Fri 31st October Mark & I backed old pal Steve Welch on 3 numbers at Scaledown. Steve openend with a solo acapella rendition of Jilted John, which went down a storm. This was followed by all three of us performing Ellan Vannin, a song about a ship going down in a storm. We finished off with Three Jolly Boys, which pretty much summed up how we were feeling by that point.
